Dofollow Blogs and Directories

If you’re looking to build backlinks, one of the simplest way to do so is to leave comments linking back to your site on dofollow blogs. Dofollow blogs pass on some of their Google Page Rank to each site they link to. Read more about dofollow and dofollow directories at design Vixen.

First Impression – Safari 4

I have a confession to make.

I have never used Safari other than on my iPhone. Until now, that is. In fact, I am typing this in Safari 4 right now. My first impression was mediocre. I got this page that took ages to load my top visited sites (although I suspect it gave me a bunch of random sites instead because I haven’t actually used the browser before). Just now I tried adding an image below my last sentence, but Safari doesn’t seem to like the ‘Insert into Post’ button. I don’t know why. Anyway, I’m manually adding it now, but I’m not very pleased.

Top sites in Safari browser

My next impression was that it seemed so spacious. I don’t know if it’s the feel of the new interface, but it seemed much more open than Chrome. The fact that the font size in the top bar is smaller than it is with Google Chrome may contribute to the space seeming larger, but upon comparison we can see that with the bookmark bar expanded in both browsers, Safari and Chrome’s toolbars take up exactly the same amount of space (see ‘A’ below). With Google Chrome’s bookmark bar closed using Ctrl+B, Chrome’s toolbar becomes much thinner (see ‘B’ below). I’m not sure how to close Safari’s bookmark bar yet, if it’s even possible.

(Hey, the ‘Insert into Post’ button worked that time!)

Speed-wise, I’ve read that Safari 4 is meant to be quite fast. I’m not seeing it. Google Chrome, so far, definitely beats Safari in speed here. I’ll keep using it for a while to see how I like it overall, though I doubt I will switch over to Safari permanently. So far, Google Chrome is still my browser of choice.

I Don’t Want my Brain to be Stunted :’(

:o I’m not attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights! Ok, maybe a little – but that’s besides the point. Apparently websites like MySpace and Facebook are rewiring our brains and “infantilising” them to those of small children and making us attracted to buzzing noises and bright lights. Susan Greenfield, an Oxford University neuroscientist, says that it is causing us to live “for the moment”. Heck, I like living for the moment. I’ll go browse MySpace for a bit more.

In all seriousness, I have no doubt that social networking sites promote vanity and sometimes self-obsession as Ms. Greenfield says. But can they really stunt the development of the brain? Now I’m all worried.

Anonymous Saves Dusty the Cat

A shocking video of two boys taking part in animal abuse by beating, strangling, and harassing a cat named Dusty was picked up by /b/ and investigations were quickly under way on the random image board, resulting in the identity of the main abuser – Kenny Glenn of Oklahoma – being found out. Info below, courtesy of http://neverforgetdusty.com

The comments and the views were out of control. I went over to /b/ and wanted to see if there was anything happening. /b/ is known for their love of cats and their raiding mentality. They created the LOLCAT meme as well as a bunch of other memes like “RickRolling.” /b/ was just starting on the topic and the threads were getting hectic. I joined in. The first bit of information came from a comment on his youtube account. From the comments we found out his name was Mike Glenn. An address was also posted in New York (an update about the NY address being thrown around, evidently people called them ). People started to spread out and it was a very decentralized investigation. People kept posting that he might be from England. Further investigation by looking at his youtube account friends, and his alternate youtube account NPCfilms. The information kept trickling in. Then someone did a search on glennspam1 and they found the same username on http://www.haitiwow.com/video/profile/glennspam1/ a video hosting website. This website had his real zip code.

From his real zip code they found out there was someone with the last name of Glenn that lived in Lawton, Oklahoma. Doing a search on the popular websites, it came up with a close match, which is Kenny Glenn. They found his Myspace account and his Facebook account of the guy that had a similiar name. This is where the detectives that are /b/ did the research. They pulled the picture from his facebook profile picture and compared it with a screencap from the movie. Here is what was being posted on /b/. Same room!

This shows just how simple it is to find out people’s identities through the internet these days. This is a great thing when dealing with bastards like Kenny Glenn, but is also worrying when it comes to innocent people who are just trying to keep their privacy online.
