Creating Custom iPhone Ringtones

I spent quite a while last night creating custom iPhone ringtones. I got tired of the generic tones that came with the phone and made some of my own. If you’d like to create your own custom iPhone ringtones, here’s what you do:

1. Download an Audio Editor. There are plenty of free audio editors which you can download for the PC, and I believe Macs already come with their own (though I’m not sure as I don’t own a Mac). Two great free programs are Audacity and WavePad Sound Editor.

2. Edit your Chosen Song. Import a song which you would like to use for your ringtone into your chosen sound editor and edit the song to be no more than 40 seconds long. The editors I suggested above allow you to cut out any part of the song to use. You can also have the sound fade in or out if you wish. I chose to use choruses for the four ringtones I’ve made.

3. Save your Ringtone. Save your ringtone to a folder on your computer in .m4a format. Most free audio editors will have this file format option.

4. Change the Extension to .m4r. Go to the folder in which your new ringtones is saved and rename it to end with .m4r instead of .m4a. You will probably get a warning about how the file may be unsuable after you change this. Just ignore the warning.

5. Import the .m4r file into iTunes. Open iTunes and drag your new ringtone into the ‘ringtone library’

6. Sync your iPhone. Sync your iPhone with your computer and the ringtone you created should now be reachable in your iPhone sound settings.

There you have it – you’ve now created your custom iPhone ringtone.
