CamSpace Officially Rocks

Ok, I’ve been playing around with CamSpace and it is awesome! CamSpace Beta 8.0 was released on February 12, 2009 – so not long ago at all. I haven’t actually used CamSpace until Beta 8.0

Anyway, I started out by playing one of their downloadable games (oh yes, did I mention CamSpace has a bunch of free games you can download?) – bowling. I had just enough light in my room for it to be quite smooth. Basically, the way it works is you find a bright object that you can use as a remote (I used a pink highlighter). Before the game starts you ‘lock in’ the object and then you simply move it around in view of your webcam to play!

I wanted to try playing Guild Wars with CamSpace. However, to play other Windows games there needs to be a ‘CamSpace Game Controller’ created for that game and uploaded to the site. And it seems that nobody has created one for Guild Wars as of yet. I guess I’ll have to wait until one pops up.

I just can’t believe how much fun the bowling game was, as you can probably tell by my expression below (the weird-colored blurs in the photos are from the CamSpace cam viewer, I am assuming because the color of the highlighter was somewhat similar to the color of my lips, so the software picked it up.) I’m off to play more downloadable CamSpace games!

P.S.: Just played Missle Game 3D. Definitely recommend it!

so it operates like a wii controller? Waaay cool… So u place the sensor underneath the screen, rite? Do we need to install/download any software? how much isit?

Twj, the only sensor you need is a webcam. And you just put it on top of the screen or somewhere else where you are in the middle of the shot. Other than a webcam all you need is the free CamSpace software, which can be found at http://www.camspace.com.

that is seriously cool… Where did you get it? Where u from anyway?

And dont mind me asking… what is that in ur mouth in the photos?

  4. tech Vixen

You download CamSpace from http://www.camspace.com. After that all you need is a webcam. My mouth is distorted in the photos because it resembles the same color as the highlighter which I am using as a remote. When you use CamSpace to lock in to an object (in my case a pink highlighter), it tracks an object of that color and brightness to tell where the ‘remote’ is. So if I lock in on a pink highlighter, it will start to pick up other pink objects in the shot as well – in this case my mouth!

so you have to use objects of diff colour frm the environment as seen frm the webcam?

  6. gaming Vixen

    Yup :)

  7. twj986

so what if your highlighter and lips moved at the same time?

  8. tech Vixen

It didn’t seem to affect me much when I was using the highlighter and it was also picking up my lips. I did get it to lock in on my face once though and got to move my head around as a remote xD

Interesting concept. New head Wii controller… Wahahaha… Hilarious.

So the camera is the controller? That is brilliant. I think you should let the CamSpace guys know about it picking up your lips. I think this can be easily fixed with a few heuristics.

Oh I think they would already know about that anyway as the instructions clearly say to pick a color for your ‘remote’ (in my case a pink highlighter) that is as different from anything you already have on you as possible. I guess my lips were just too pink :D
